Join a Short-term Mission Team
If you're praying about signing up for a short-term mission team, you
probably have a lot of questions. The following information is a good starting
point to guide you as you begin preparing to serve in another context. Your team
leader will contact you about team meetings, training opportunities, and
team-specific details. But … this info should help get you
started!
Apply for a Mission Team
After you have communicated your interest to join a mission team to the leader of that trip, you should complete the Short-term Mission Trip Application and submit it to the Director of Mission Ministries.
Get Your Passport
It’s never too early to get your passport. It generally takes 6
weeks to get your passport book, so go ahead and apply now in order to avoid
additional fees. Complete passport information—including the
application and information about fees—can be found at the U.S. State
Department’s website. If
you are traveling ANYWHERE outside of the United States, you will need a
passport book.
Form Your Support Team
The
purpose of your Support Team is two-fold. First, this team is
your prayer base for your mission service. Second, these individuals may
assist you in the task of raising the funds needed to go. This team is
much more than a group of people who may "write a check" for you. Don’t
miss the biggest benefit of having a Global Support Team—prayer support.
Raise Financial Support
One
of the best ways to enlist your Support Team is by sending
support letters. Remember, you are not only requesting financial
support. You also need them to pray for you so a prayer network will be
in place on your behalf. Download the suggested guidelines pdf.
Mission Ministry Financial Policies
- Fundraising and Financial Guidelines for West Hills Mission Teams (PDF download)
- Mission Scholarship Application (PDF download) - It
is the belief of the Mission Ministry Team and of West Hills Church
that every individual who experiences God’s call to join a short-term
mission team should have the opportunity to respond to that call. If an
individual, after sacrificial living and efforts to raise support from
family and friends is unable to pay for their participation a Mission
Scholarship may be available.
Packing & Travel Details
Your team leader will provide you with packing lists and important travel details. If you are new to international travel or plane travel you may want to review the information on the Transportation Security Administration website or the travel tips provided by the U.S. State Department.
