God Uses Ordinary People

by Luke Burns on May 01, 2020

I think I’m a pretty average person.  I have strengths and I have weaknesses, but it feels like I have way more weaknesses than I do strengths.  Have you ever had a really hard time doing a homework assignment because it was just so hard to understand?  And then you go to school the next day and find out that all your friends thought the homework was easy?  This used to happen to me all the time.  It’s easy to feel like you are stupid, and won't amount to anything.  I used to think that other people got the smart genes and I’m out here all alone struggling just to get by.

The thing that makes me happy is realizing that God used a bunch of super ordinary and unimpressive people to do amazing things.  Moses had a speech impediment, David couldn’t control his lust, Thomas doubted, and Paul had a thorn in his flesh.  Scripture is filled with people who are imperfect.  God uses who He pleases, however He pleases, whenever he pleases.  He can and will use you too.

There is no need to feel inadequate, because God is our strength and our wisdom.  The apostle Paul actually boasted in his weakness.  2 Corinthians 12:9 – “But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.”

Let’s have the same attitude that Paul had.  He knew he wasn’t perfect, but he was okay with that and realized that God can still use Him to accomplish amazing things.  Paul went on to write a huge part of the New Testament and converted tons of people to Christianity.  God used him, and He can use you too!
